What are measles symptoms?

Symptoms typically appear 7–14 days after exposure. Watch for:

  • High fever
  • Cough, runny nose, or red/watery eyes
  • A red, blotchy rash that usually starts on the face and spreads downward

If you develop these symptoms, call your doctor before going in so they can prepare and prevent spreading measles to others in the waiting room.

How to protect yourself and your family

  • The MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine is the best protection. Two doses are about 97% effective.
  • If you are unsure whether you or your children are vaccinated, contact your doctor.
  • Babies aged 6–11 months can receive an early MMR dose now due to local spread — talk to your child’s pediatrician.
