South Asia (India, Nepal, Bangladesh)

Vaccines for Asia Travel: How We Build Your Plan

Asia covers very different risk profiles. A beach week in Thailand, a rural homestay in Vietnam, a family visit to India and a business trip to Tokyo each need a different plan. At your consultation we review every country on your route, the season, how long you will stay and how rural you will be, then recommend only the vaccines for Asia travel that fit your trip.

Japanese encephalitis

Japanese encephalitis (a mosquito-borne brain infection) is found across much of Southeast and South Asia. Risk is highest in rural and farming areas, especially during the rainy season. We generally recommend the vaccine for longer stays, rural travel or extensive outdoor time, and we decide together based on your itinerary.

Southeast Asia and South Asia

For Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines, most travelers need hepatitis A and typhoid protection, along with careful food and water habits. India, Nepal and Bangladesh carry a higher typhoid risk, including drug-resistant strains, so we put typhoid protection near the top of the list. Rabies is a real risk across the region from dogs and monkeys, including in popular spots like Bali, so we may recommend pre-exposure rabies vaccination, a 2-dose series given on days 0 and 7. Heading to one region? See our dedicated Southeast Asia travel vaccines and India travel vaccines pages, or our guides to Thailand and Bali.

Malaria, dengue and routine vaccines

Dengue is common across tropical Asia and has no vaccine for most travelers, so mosquito bite prevention matters on every trip. Malaria risk varies by country and region, and we discuss prescription prevention where it applies. We also confirm your MMR, Tdap and seasonal flu vaccines are current.

When should I book?

We recommend booking 4 to 6 weeks before departure, since the Japanese encephalitis and rabies series take time to complete. Leaving sooner? Call (480) 435-2774. Our Scottsdale travel clinic serves travelers from across the Phoenix metro, and you can book online any time.
