Vaccines for Europe Travel: What Most Travelers Need

Most trips to Europe need fewer travel vaccines than trips to the tropics, but “fewer” is not “none.” At your consultation we review where you are going, what you will be doing and your vaccination history, then recommend the travel vaccinations for Europe that fit your trip.

Measles and routine vaccines

Measles outbreaks have been reported in several European countries in recent years. Before any international trip we confirm you are protected with MMR, and we check that your Tdap booster and seasonal flu vaccine are up to date. These routine vaccines are the most common gap we see in travelers heading to Europe.

Tick-borne encephalitis for hikers and campers

Tick-borne encephalitis (a tick-borne brain infection) is present in forested areas of Central and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and the Baltic states, with most cases in spring and summer. If your plans include hiking, camping, cycling or working outdoors in these areas, we may recommend the vaccine, which is given as a series and needs time to take effect.

Hepatitis A and B

Hepatitis A is spread through contaminated food and water and is recommended for many travelers, including to parts of Eastern Europe. Hepatitis B is worth discussing for longer stays, medical or volunteer work, or anyone who may need medical care abroad.
