Fake Rabies Vaccines Are Circulating – Travelers May Not Be Protected
The Philippine Food and Drug Administration has confirmed that counterfeit rabies vaccines are circulating through unauthorized sources across the country. The fake products closely mimic three genuine registered vaccines: Vaxirab-N, Speeda, and Abhayrab. A joint operation in March 2026 uncovered deliberate illegal manufacture and distribution of falsified vaccines in Taguig City. The full extent of distribution remains unknown.
Rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms appear. A vaccine that does not work has no protection at all.
Who this affects
- Anyone who received rabies post-exposure treatment in the Philippines after an animal bite.
- Anyone who received pre-exposure rabies vaccination while traveling there.
What to do if you were vaccinated or bitten in the Philippines
- Contact your healthcare provider immediately to determine whether revaccination with a verified authentic vaccine is needed.
- Do not wait for symptoms. Rabies is not treatable once they appear.
- Keep any records of vaccines received abroad, including the vaccine name, batch number, date, and facility.
- Travel to another country may be required to access a reliable source of authentic rabies vaccine if unavailable locally.
Before your next trip to the Philippines
- Get vaccinated before you go rather than relying on post-exposure treatment abroad. Pre-exposure vaccination (PrEP) is a three-dose series that provides a critical safety net and simplifies care if you are exposed.
- If bitten or scratched by any animal, wash the wound immediately with soap and water for at least 15 minutes and go directly to an established healthcare facility.
- Ask about the source and procurement chain of any vaccine before it is given.
- Avoid contact with dogs, cats, bats, and other animals. The Philippines has one of the highest rabies rates in Asia.
