Chikungunya Outbreak in Nicaragua: First in Five Years

CDC Issues Level 2 Travel Health Notice for the Managua Region on August 4, 2026

More than 400 cases have been reported since May 2026 throughout the country, with most cases concentrated in Managua. This is the first chikungunya outbreak in Nicaragua since 2021. A broader regional resurgence of chikungunya has been underway across the Americas since late 2025, with re-emergence of local transmission in areas that had not reported virus circulation for several years.

Symptoms to watch for

Symptoms typically begin 3 to 7 days after a mosquito bite. Watch for:

  • Sudden fever and severe joint pain
  • Headache, muscle pain, or rash
  • Joint swelling in some cases

Most people recover within a week, but some experience joint pain for months. Death from chikungunya is rare.
