Uganda Cholera Outbreak: Uganda is experiencing a significant increase in cholera cases, with more than 100 cases reported in July 2025, primarily in Amaru District. Since January 2025, approximately 255 cholera cases have been reported, mainly concentrated in Amaru and Lamwo districts.
The risk to general travelers remains MINIMAL. However, certain groups should take additional precautions and consider vaccination.
Who Should Consider Cholera Vaccination for Uganda –
Aid and refugee workers traveling to affected areas, medically vulnerable persons visiting affected regions, and travelers visiting friends and relatives in Amaru or Lamwo districts should consider cholera vaccination.
Regardless of vaccination status, all travelers should observe strict food and beverage precautions. Eat only fully cooked, hot food and drink bottled or properly boiled water. Avoid ice, raw vegetables, salads, and street vendor food. Always peel fruits yourself and skip any raw or undercooked seafood.
Maintain rigorous hand hygiene by washing hands frequently and thoroughly with soap, especially before eating and after using the bathroom. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap is unavailable.
Travel Health Kit Essentials –
Carry azithromycin for empiric antibiotic therapy and oral rehydration solution (ORS) packets for self-treatment if moderate-to-severe diarrhea develops. Also pack alcohol-based hand sanitizer and water purification tablets or a portable filter.
If You Develop Watery Diarrhea –
Ensure adequate intake of clean water and avoid high-sugar beverages. Use oral rehydration solution (ORS) if available and oral fluids are tolerated. Seek immediate medical attention for severe symptoms and consider antibiotic treatment as advised by your healthcare provider.
Emergency Symptoms Requiring Immediate Medical Care –
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe, persistent watery diarrhea, signs of dehydration such as dizziness or dry mouth, vomiting that prevents keeping fluids down, high fever, or severe abdominal cramping.
Prevention is Key – Remember: COOK IT, BOIL IT, PEEL IT, or FORGET IT
