India Monsoon 2026: Flooding and Landslides Disrupt Travel

Seasonal Flooding Is Widespread and Conditions Are Worsening

Severe monsoon flooding and landslides have been affecting multiple regions of India since July 2026, and conditions are expected to continue through September. The Assam flood crisis has displaced over 5.24 lakh people, claimed 68 lives, and caused significant damage to transport infrastructure across Northeast India. Nearly 100 villages and over 1,600 hectares of agricultural land have been inundated, with a railway bridge partially collapsed and several villages isolated.

The India Meteorological Department has warned that the southwest monsoon remains highly active across eastern, northeastern, and northern India, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall expected in the coming days. Travelers should expect significant and unpredictable disruptions.

Key risks for travelers

  • Road closures, bridge damage, and rail disruptions across multiple states
  • Flooding increases risk of waterborne illness, leptospirosis, and mosquito-borne diseases
  • Limited access to emergency healthcare in affected areas
  • Landslides in hill stations and mountain regions, including popular tourist destinations in the northeast
