The Texas State Department of Health Services (TSDHS) reports that a measles outbreak in Gaines County, Texas, has surged to 24 cases—up from just six last week. All affected individuals are unvaccinated, and nine have been hospitalized. Additionally, a new case has been reported in a neighboring county in New Mexico.
Measles outbreaks occur when community immunization levels drop below a critical threshold. As one of the most contagious diseases in the world, measles can be especially dangerous for children. Fortunately, two doses of the MMR vaccine provide lifelong protection against the disease.
