Chikungunya Outbreak in the Maldives and South America

The European CDC reports an ongoing outbreak of Chikungunya disease in The Maldives, a popular tropical resort destination in the Indian Ocean. There is also a huge outbreak of Chikungunya in South America, with Brazil reporting a startling 357,000 cases, followed by Paraguay and Argentina. See map where Chikungunya cases have been reported.

Chikungunya disease is caused by the chikungunya virus and is spread to humans through mosquito bites. Outbreaks periodically occur in tropical latitude regions around the world. Most people infected with chikungunya virus will develop high fever and severe joint pain. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash. Most people get better within a week; however, some can have chronic severe joint pain that persists for months to years.

There is no specific treatment for chikungunya. If you are traveling to an endemic or outbreak area, it is important to practice strict insect bite prevention measures. Visit your travel health specialist to find out if you are at risk for Chikungunya and what you can do to prevent it.

A new vaccine to prevent Chikungunya has been recently licensed in the US. Visit TravelBug Health to see if the vaccine is appropriate for you.
