Travel Clinic vs. Primary Care Physician
Why Tempe students, faculty, and travelers choose a specialized travel medicine clinic over their family doctor.
1 Journal of Travel Medicine, Jan/Feb 2011; 18(1): Primary care providers more likely to prescribe inappropriate malaria prophylaxis.
Why Tempe Students and ASU Faculty Trust TravelBug Health for Study Abroad Prep
ASU sends more students abroad than almost any university in the country, and Tempe is where those journeys start. The challenge is that study abroad health requirements aren’t just about getting a few shots. They involve coordinating immunization timelines, meeting host institution documentation requirements, understanding destination-specific health risks, and having the right prescriptions in hand if something goes wrong while you’re far from home. That’s exactly what a specialized travel medicine clinic is built to handle, and it’s why Tempe-area students and ASU faculty come to TravelBug Health instead of a walk-in clinic or their general practitioner.
Our travel medicine specialists stay current on CDC and WHO advisories for every major study abroad destination, from Accra to Hanoi to Buenos Aires. We understand the difference between a program in urban Tokyo and a service-learning trip to rural Tanzania, and we build your pre-travel consultation accordingly. At 20 minutes from the ASU Tempe campus, we’re close enough to fit into a packed academic schedule and thorough enough to handle even the most complex multi-country research itineraries.

Real reviews from patients who trusted TravelBug Health for their pre-travel health needs.
“I had my study abroad pre-departure health clearance for a semester in Ghana due in two weeks and my regular doctor had no idea which vaccines I needed. TravelBug Health got me in the next day, handled yellow fever certification, typhoid, and malaria meds, and gave me documentation my host university accepted immediately. Every ASU student studying abroad should go here.”
“Norm was incredibly thorough with our family’s travel consultation before our trip to Southeast Asia. He made sure our kids had the right immunizations and explained food safety precautions we hadn’t even thought about. Worth every penny.”
“As a corporate travel manager, I send all our employees here before international assignments. TravelBug’s team knows exactly which vaccines are needed for each country and the turnaround is fast. They’ve become our go-to travel clinic.”
Travel Clinic FAQs for Tempe & ASU Patients
Don’t see your question? Call (480) 435-2774 or email us.
As early as possible. Ideally 6 to 8 weeks before departure. Some vaccines like Hepatitis B require a series spread over multiple weeks. That said, if your departure is coming up fast, contact us immediately. We’ll prioritize what’s most critical and work within your timeline.
Bring your passport, your program itinerary (including all countries and any in-country travel), your study abroad program’s health clearance requirements if provided, your vaccination records, any current medications, and your insurance card. Having your program documentation lets us make sure every requirement is met precisely.
Some vaccines may be covered under preventive care, particularly Hepatitis A, Tdap boosters, or MMR updates. Destination-specific vaccines like yellow fever and Japanese Encephalitis are typically out-of-pocket. ASU students should check their Sun Devil Health coverage details. We provide itemized receipts for any reimbursement you pursue.
Yes, we see patients of all ages including younger travelers. Pediatric dosing and schedules are factored in. Parents or legal guardians should accompany minors and bring their vaccination history.
Yes. We issue official vaccination documentation including the ICVP (International Certificate of Vaccination and Prophylaxis) for yellow fever and can provide signed letters or vaccination records formatted to meet most institutional health clearance requirements. If your program has a specific form, bring it and we’ll complete it at your visit.
Absolutely. Complex itineraries are our specialty. We review each destination individually, cross-reference their specific disease risks and entry requirements, and build a single coordinated care plan that covers every leg of your trip. Many ASU faculty come to us for exactly this reason. Research travel often involves destinations with significant health risk profiles that require a specialist, not a general practitioner.
Our Scottsdale clinic is approximately 20 minutes from the ASU Tempe campus. Head north on Rural Rd to US-60 W, then take Loop 101 N. Exit at Shea Blvd heading east. We’re located at 8603 E Royal Palm Rd, Suite 120. Free parking is available on-site.
